Yu Pei Kuo unveils "ALTERNATIVE," a genderless fashion collection inspired by ancient unisex attires from both Western and Eastern cultures, aiming to blur the boundaries of standard gender fashion.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yu Pei Kuo's "ALTERNATIVE" collection draws inspiration from ancient unisex attires, including Greek Chiton, Roma Tunic, China Shenyi, and Thai Jongkraben, to create a modern genderless fashion design. The collection features 14 items, including tops, bottoms, and outwear, designed with flexibility to adjust fitting for different body types. The project was realized using flexible connections, materials, and folding techniques, allowing for versatile and adjustable garments.
The "ALTERNATIVE" collection challenges traditional gender fashion by presenting garments on both male and female bodies, showcasing the versatility and inclusivity of the designs. The project was initiated in August 2019 in Bangkok and completed in August 2020, with exhibitions in Bangkok and Taipei in 2020. The collection has been selected for the "2021 Bangkok Design Week" and will be exhibited in May 2021.
Yu Pei Kuo's research for the "ALTERNATIVE" collection involved in-depth exploration of genderless wearable fitting, historical analysis, and the fusion of ancient costume prototypes with modern design concepts. Overcoming creative and technical challenges, Kuo successfully integrated the genderless concept into the flexible design, enabling self-identity through fashion.
The "ALTERNATIVE" collection has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2021, acknowledging its practical and innovative approach that meets professional and industrial requirements. Yu Pei Kuo's diverse background as a designer, lecturer, and curator reflects her commitment to exploring different fields and cultures in her creative journey.
