Wacky Pack: Redefining Footwear Closures with Unorthodox Construction and Fastening Methods

Renowned designer Ye Shen introduces Wacky Pack, a groundbreaking collection of interactive footwear that challenges traditional shoe closure methods. The collection, born out of a 4-month project in Fall 2018 at the Rhode Island School of Design, reimagines the mundane act of tying a shoe, offering a new level of improvisation and customization for everyday fashion.

Wacky Pack explores unorthodox construction and fastening methods, creating unique interactions between the shoe and the user. Each design was meticulously prototyped to finalize proportions, soling methods, and most importantly, closure system design. The collection features veg-tanned leather with various thicknesses and custom-tailored metal hardware, offering a diverse range of interactions and experiences.

With designs like Bao Bao, O Snap, and Sticky Fingers, Wacky Pack provides a fresh take on interactive footwear, allowing wearers to engage with their shoes in innovative ways. The collection was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence.

Ye Shen, a designer with an Industrial Design education taught in a Bauhaus manner, is known for infusing his products with functional and emotional perspectives. His work transcends mass-production, focusing on consumer-centered designs that provoke meaningful interactions. With a unique blend of artistic aesthetic and user-friendly functionality, Ye Shen's designs aim to create products that resonate with users on a deeper level.
