Zig Zag: Award-Winning Contemporary Jewelry Line Transforms Leather into Sculptural, Wearable Art

The Zig Zag jewelry line, designed by Mayté Ossorio Domecq, has been honored with the Bronze A' Jewelry Design Award 2025, recognizing its inventive approach to material transformation and sustainable craftsmanship. Conceived and developed in Buenos Aires between 2019 and 2022, Zig Zag draws inspiration from the way rigid paper adapts to new forms through strategic cuts and folds. This concept is translated into double-layered leather rectangles, which are meticulously hand-cut to create rhythmic, equidistant lines that allow each piece to curve and move gracefully with the body.

Each item in the Zig Zag collection-ranging from necklaces and bracelets to earrings-begins as overlapping leather remnants. Through a process of experimentation and applied research, Domecq developed a technique that maximizes flexibility and visual impact while minimizing material waste. The handcrafted pieces are shaped using cutting dies and hole punch tools, ensuring both structural integrity and comfort. The result is a line of jewelry that is lightweight, silent in movement, and easy to wear, with adjustable features and secure metal fastenings for daily use.

Beyond its technical achievements, Zig Zag stands out for its commitment to sustainability and resource optimization. By repurposing small leather remnants and employing a design methodology rooted in direct material experimentation, Domecq has created jewelry that is both visually striking and environmentally conscious. The collection's success is reflected not only in its international sales across Germany, Turkey, and Argentina, but also in its recognition with the Sello del Buen Diseño Argentino 2024. Zig Zag exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday objects into meaningful, wearable art while fostering responsible production practices.
