FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bonan Li's Shrink Pleat Minimal Waste Dress has captured international attention by earning the Bronze A' Design Award in the 2025 Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design category. The project, which began in New York in 2013 and was completed in 2014, was recently exhibited at Cave of the Day, Cave of the Night in Brooklyn. The dress stands out for its pioneering approach to sustainability, merging heritage weaving techniques with modern zero-waste methodologies and innovative pleating processes.
Inspired by the intersection of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary sustainability, Li developed a unique method that utilizes localized fabric shrinkage and pleating to create sculptural, three-dimensional forms. Each dress is crafted from locally handwoven textiles sourced globally, preserving artisanal skills while reducing energy consumption and material waste. The design process involves zero-waste cutting and meticulous hand-fixing of pleats, mapped onto cardboard for small-batch production, ensuring both precision and minimal environmental impact.
The Shrink Pleat Minimal Waste Dress transforms fabric into dynamic, flowing silhouettes that move organically with the wearer. By allowing the fabric to adjust naturally through controlled shrinkage, Li eliminates the need for traditional cutting, resulting in a garment that is both comfortable and structurally innovative. The project's research-driven approach involved extensive experimentation with fabric behavior, pleat fixation, and material testing, overcoming challenges in sourcing ethical materials and achieving precise structural outcomes. This award-winning design not only advances sustainable fashion but also highlights the importance of preserving traditional techniques in a modern context.
