Cynthia Gómez Ramírez and the Huazolo Aphrodites embroidery collective have been honored with the Silver A' Design Award 2025 for their collaborative fashion project, which celebrates the ancestral textile heritage of Santa María Huazolotitlán, Oaxaca, Mexico, through sustainable, zero-waste garments that fuse indigenous artistry with contemporary design.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Huazolo Aphrodites collection, designed by Cynthia Gómez Ramírez in partnership with master embroiderers from Santa María Huazolotitlán, Oaxaca, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design category for 2025. This project stands out for its deep engagement with indigenous communities, aiming to preserve and revitalize ancestral textile techniques while introducing them to a broader audience through modern fashion.
The collection draws inspiration from the daily life, topography, and rich symbolism of the region. The designers immersed themselves in the community, learning about traditional embroidery motifs such as multicolored rhombuses representing the days of the week and animal figures symbolizing local fauna. These elements were reinterpreted in contemporary silhouettes-ponchos, blouses, and dresses-crafted using zero-waste techniques based on the indigenous huipil, with patterns cut from squares and rectangles to minimize fabric waste.
A key feature of the project is its collaborative nature, fostering an exchange of knowledge between designers and artisans. The process involved multiple meetings and workshops to ensure the garments authentically reflected the community's identity and values. Local textiles and sustainable materials were prioritized, supporting both environmental responsibility and the local economy. The result is a collection that not only showcases the beauty and technical mastery of Oaxacan embroidery but also provides economic opportunities for the artisans, ensuring the continuation of their craft for future generations.
The recognition by the A' Design Award jury highlights the collection's exceptional creativity, technical excellence, and its positive impact on both cultural preservation and sustainable fashion. Through this project, Cynthia Gómez Ramírez and the Huazolo Aphrodites collective have set a new standard for meaningful, community-driven design in the global fashion landscape.
