The Ayla bag, designed by Liam Huff, represents a significant advancement in sustainable fashion, addressing the environmental challenges associated with traditional leather goods. Conceived and developed from August 2023 to May 2024 at Rochester Institute of Technology, Ayla utilizes modular leather panels and detachable brass hinges, enabling users to easily repair or transform the bag, thus extending its lifecycle and minimizing waste. This innovative approach has earned Ayla the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Fashion and Travel Accessories category for 2025.

Unlike conventional leather bags, which often contribute to a take-make-waste culture, Ayla is engineered for longevity and adaptability. The bag's unique construction allows any damaged panel to be replaced individually, eliminating the need to discard the entire product. The detachable hinge system not only simplifies repairs but also supports creative repurposing; pre-planned patterns enable users to convert salvaged panels into smaller accessories, such as clutches, further reducing environmental impact.

Huff's design process combined extensive research, including interviews with industry professionals and user surveys, to ensure that Ayla meets both aesthetic and functional expectations. The final product features a pin-based assembly system, eschewing traditional stitching in favor of a more durable and easily serviceable structure. With its polished brass hardware and thoughtfully selected leather, Ayla offers a sophisticated look that appeals to eco-conscious consumers without compromising on style or usability.

The recognition from the A' Design Award underscores Ayla's role as a model for responsible product design in the fashion industry. By prioritizing repairability, modularity, and end-of-life transformation, Ayla sets a new standard for how leather goods can be produced and enjoyed sustainably.
