Semnan-based designers Mina Aliyari and Shahin Nayyer have been honored with the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for their innovative clothing design, Gordafarid, which reimagines Persian cultural heritage through sustainable fashion by blending traditional Iranian handicrafts with contemporary techniques to celebrate the courage and beauty of women.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Gordafarid, the latest creation by Mina Aliyari and Shahin Nayyer, has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Fashion, Apparel, and Garment Design category for 2025. Developed in Semnan, Iran, between May and December 2024, this unique garment pays homage to the resilience and beauty of women, drawing inspiration from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh and the symbolism of Persian handicrafts. The designers sought to challenge anti-women thinking by transforming damaged Iranian carpets into wearable art, symbolizing both the wounds and the enduring spirit of women.
The dress stands out for its innovative use of materials and techniques. It incorporates environmentally friendly linen for the pants, crafted using the draping method inspired by Iranian tribal attire, and a torso made from repurposed Persian carpets. The design features a springy, formable shawl created with metal spring wires and fabric, representing both limitation and the potential for transformation. The headband merges Iranian geometric motifs with modern origami, further bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary aesthetics. Each element is designed for versatility, allowing the pieces to be worn, displayed as art, or used functionally in the home.
Gordafarid is more than a fashion statement; it is a cultural narrative that revives the value of damaged crafts and reinterprets them for modern audiences. The project involved extensive research into the history of Iranian clothing and the roles of influential women, ensuring authenticity and depth. Overcoming challenges related to material adaptation and maintaining harmony with the body's form, the designers successfully created a comfortable, stylish, and meaningful garment. The recognition from the A' Design Award highlights the significance of their approach, which not only preserves heritage but also promotes sustainable, innovative fashion.
