FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Zilli Rug: A Fusion of Traditional Karacakilavuz Weaving and Contemporary Design, Honored with Bronze A' Design Award

Zilli is a unique hand-woven rug designed by Begum Karadag, founder of Buruz, and crafted using the geographically marked Karacakilavuz weaving technique native to Tekirdag, Turkey. This rare method, which dates back centuries, was on the verge of extinction until Karadag's initiative to revive it. Zilli stands out by combining authentic Anatolian motifs-each symbolizing aspects of life such as fertility, luck, and protection-with a postmodern aesthetic, making it suitable for contemporary interiors while preserving its cultural roots.

The rug is meticulously produced in Buruz's workshop, the first in Turkey dedicated to sustainable women's employment in Karacakilavuz weaving. Each piece is hand-woven on oak looms using vegetable-dyed wool and undyed cotton warp threads. The motifs, including horseshoe, dog paw, scorpion, clover, and cocklebur, are embroidered during the weaving process with the Cicim technique, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the craft. Three woven panels are joined asymmetrically with a knitted wool chain, and a cotton lining is added for durability and comfort. Every fringe is hand-attached, reflecting the attention to detail and artisanal skill involved.

Zilli's production process is entirely sustainable, relying on natural materials and traditional methods that avoid mass production. Each rug takes approximately one month to complete, and its dimensions can be customized. The project not only preserves a valuable cultural heritage but also provides meaningful employment to local women, many of whom are graduates of vocational weaving courses. Zilli's innovative blend of tradition and modernity, coupled with its social impact, was recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry category in 2025.
