Zhiyan Huang's Dunhuang jewelry collection for Liang Xing, inspired by the murals of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, has been awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2025 for its innovative blend of traditional Chinese filigree inlay and contemporary 3D modeling, showcased at Beijing Fashion Week and the Diplomatic Shop.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Liang Xing's Dunhuang jewelry collection, designed by Zhiyan Huang, has been recognized with the Golden A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its outstanding integration of Chinese cultural heritage and advanced technology. Drawing inspiration from the iconic flying apsaras and ribbons depicted in the murals of Dunhuang's Mogao Cave 217 and Cave 320, the collection translates ancient visual motifs into elegant, wearable art. The pieces debuted at Beijing Fashion Week in September 2024 and were subsequently featured at the Diplomatic Shop by China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in February 2025.
The Dunhuang collection stands out for its unique fusion of traditional Chinese filigree inlay-one of the eight masterpieces of Beijing's intangible cultural heritage-with state-of-the-art 3D modeling and jewelry-grade printing. Each piece, crafted from silver, gold, and sea pearls, embodies the dynamic beauty of Tang Dynasty Buddhist art, especially the flowing ribbons and graceful forms of the flying apsaras. Liang Xing's approach is both artistic and archaeological, aiming to promote Chinese art and intangible heritage on a global stage while maintaining a verifiable visual expression rooted in history.
Overcoming significant technical challenges, the design team successfully adapted the traditionally flat filigree inlay technique to the collection's fully three-dimensional forms, ensuring each piece is visually striking from every angle. This innovative process required extensive three-dimensional testing and the seamless integration of digital and manual craftsmanship. The result is a collection that not only decorates the body but also evokes cultural memory, inviting wearers and viewers alike to engage with centuries of Chinese visual culture through contemporary design.
